IFR & VFR Equipment Certification
VFR Certification
Complies with: FAR §91.413 ATC transponder tests and inspections
Known as a ‘VFR certification’ this involves testing the transponder(s) to verify that they meet the requirements of FAR 43 Appendix F. This certification is good for 24 calendar months. VFR certs are typically conducted as a ramp test by interrogating the transponder as it is installed in the aircraft. This test can also be performed as a bench check, with the transponder removed, upon request. This test can be conducted in as little as 15 min if the system is working properly.
IFR Certification
Complies with: FAR §91.413 and FAR §91.411 Altimeter system and altitude reporting equipment tests and inspections
Known as an ‘IFR certification’ this involves testing all altimeters, all static pressure systems, and all altitude reporting systems (encoders) in the aircraft to verify that they meet the requirements of FAR 43 Appendix E. This certification also involves testing the transponder(s) to verify they meet the requirements of FAR 43 Appendix F. This certification is good for 24 calendar months. IFR certs involve tapping into the aircraft’s pitot and static systems using a calibrated test set and typically take 3 or more hours. If the aircraft static system leaks beyond 100’/min. the source of the leak will need to be located and repaired. Troubleshooting and repair of the static system is billed separately from the cost of equipment certification.
